Gold Medal Moment #6: Jackie Stiles, the scoring machine
KSN.com, August 21, 2008 WICHITA, Kansas, Aug. 21, 2008 -- You voted on our 20 gold medal moment finalists. At number six is Jackie Stiles, the scoring machine whose legend started at Claflin High School when she scored more than 3,600 points, the most of anyone, male or female, who has ever picked up a basketball in Kansas. Stiles did the same in the NCAA, leading Missouri State to the Final Four while she set the women's all-time scoring record. "Well I was very, very fortunate. I had a lot of great coaching when I was young," said Stiles. "My dad was a basketball coach and I came across a lot of tremendous coaches that are the reason that I was able to score those points. And I had a lot of unselfish teammates that would set screens and set me up and make me look good so it was a team effort." "I had a very supportive family. My mom would work two and three jobs to send me to any camp across the country that I needed to go to and just the support in Kansas which is just tremendous. That just fueled me. I just wanted to give the fans something to cheer about. It motivated me to work harder and bring my game to another level." After rookie of the year honors in the WNBA, Stiles' body broke down from her legendary work habits. She now lives in Wichita. Stiles also holds the record for most gold medals at the state track meet with 14. In 1996, she won the 400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200 -- on the same day!
